The Albayzín district of Granada is probably the most famous district in the city. The entire district has been named a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The narrow streets are almost like corridors by today’s standards. They curve and curl along, the old buildings that flank each street leaning in closely. The area is the Moorish old town, and the feeling of medieval time-warp it exerts is distinct.
The neighborhood itself sits on top of a hill directly opposite the dominant old Moorish Alhambra Palace. Also a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the palace once competed for title of New Wonder of the World. The Albayzín district provides spectacular views of the palace and over the city. The best viewpoint to take in the Alhambra is near the district’s church of San Nicolas. The Alhambra has been called a pearl among emeralds because the contrast of its bright stone color against the forest that surrounds it.
Tourists frequent this neighborhood not only to walk among the ancient buildings and to snap photos of the city and palace, but also to visit the area’s unique offerings. The Archeological Museum of Granada is located in Albayzín. It is housed in the Castril palace, a gorgeous building constructed in the 16th century. The Renaissance patio is particularly impressive, and is the first thing visitors notice upon entering. Inside, visitors find artifacts left behind by the many peoples who have lived in the area of Granada.
Tourists in Albayzín also find what remains of an Arab bath near the base of the Alhambra. When the Christian Spaniards conquered Spain, they destroyed many of the Moorish baths, which were equated with brothels. Visitors appreciate the fact that a private home was built atop this bath, which was the only reason it was spared.
The Albayzín neighborhood has many restaurants, including the famous Jardines de Zoraya, where patrons experience a Flamenco menu with the actual Flamenco performance accompanying their meal. Some streets’ selections of restaurants represent the North African influence in Granada.
The San Salvador church is another popular site to visit in Albayzín. The Moorish houses that remain nearby have proven themselves in the test of time. The Albayzín neighborhood is obviously a must-see if visiting Granada.
